Separate school districts inside the city of Olathe
An “Olathe” address can be Blue Valley USD 229, Olathe Public Schools USD 233, De Soto USD 232 or Spring Hill School District USD 230.
Which means “Leawood schools versus Overland Park schools” is a false comparison — those two cities are served by the same districts. It means a family can pay the Blue Valley premium for a house that is zoned to a different district entirely. And it means every relocation page that organises schools by city name is teaching you to make the exact mistake that costs the most.
There is one safe move, and it takes four minutes: run the exact street address through that district’s own boundary locator before you write an offer. Not the city. Not the ZIP code. Not the listing agent’s word. The address.

Districts publish their own operational window inside the statutory bounds and they differ — Shawnee Mission accepts applications June 1-15; Kansas City KS USD 500 publishes June 1-30. Always confirm the district's posted window for the year you are moving. A district with zero open seats in your grade can lawfully deny you; open enrollment is a right to apply, not a right to attend.

Missouri
No open enrollment. Your address decides, full stop.
Missouri has NO statewide public-school open enrollment. Open-enrollment bills have been filed for six straight sessions and have repeatedly died in the Senate. As of February 2026 the Senate Education Committee advanced SCS/SBs 971 & 906 (Public School Open Enrollment Act), which as drafted would not enroll any student before July 1, 2028; it had not passed the full legislature. On the Missouri side of the metro your address determines your district, full stop — with the exception of individual districts' own voluntary/tuition transfer policies, which you must ask each district about directly.
Practically: on the Missouri side, the house is the school. There is no application to file, no lottery to enter, and no second chance in June. If the district matters to you, it has to be settled before you write the offer — not after.

Districts whose own window is tighter than the statute
This is where families get caught. The statute says you may apply from January. The district says otherwise, and the district’s window is the one that will reject you.

“Kansas City Public Schools is unaccredited.”
Fully accredited.
Missouri State Board of Education, effective 2022-01-11
KCPS lost accreditation entirely in 2011, and was provisionally accredited from 2014. On January 11, 2022 the State Board of Education voted to classify it as fully accredited, effective immediately. Every relocation page still repeating the old status is running a claim that is at least four years stale — and it is doing real damage to the value of houses inside that boundary.
On Missouri’s 2025 Annual Performance Report, KCPS scored 72.2% of possible points. That is not a triumph and we are not selling it as one. It is a fact with a date on it, which is more than the claim it replaces has.
The second thing to get right: KCPS covers only a slice of the city of Kansas City, Missouri — roughly the older urban core. Most people who say they live in Kansas City, Missouri are not in KCPS at all. They are in North Kansas City, Park Hill, Center, Hickman Mills, Raytown, Blue Springs, Independence, Liberty or Platte County.

A rating appears below only where there is a real number and a source you can open. That is why 17 of 19 districts here read “no verified rating”.
Kansas issues no district rating at all. None. KSDE accredits whole systems under KESA; it does not grade districts, does not publish an A–F, and does not rank them. Every “Blue Valley: A+, #1 in Kansas” you have read is a private company’s composite — Niche’s or GreatSchools’ — dressed up as a state measure. We will not launder it. Missouri publishes exactly one figure, the MSIP 6 Annual Performance Report, and it sits behind a login on DESE’s portal, so we publish it only where a district or a newsroom quoted DESE verbatim.

What to actually do
Never buy on a city name. Run the exact street address through the district’s own boundary locator, and get the answer in writing before the offer goes in.
If you are moving to the Kansas side and the district you want is full, open enrollment is a genuine second door — but it is a right to apply, not a right to attend, the windows are short, and the popular districts post very few seats. If you are moving to the Missouri side, there is no second door at all.
